Acacia fraternity recently inducted 2 new members as of Fall 2009. The new Brothers adding their names to the Acacia ranks are John Ertl and Jon Hsieh. John Ertl is a Junior transfer into the ILR college. He previously went to school in Wisconsin and enjoys working out, playing football and partying when he's not studying. John was pledge class president of this 2 person group winning out in what was truly a very tight 2 horse race. His pledge brother Jon Hsieh is a Sophomore in the Hotel School. Jon likes cooking and working on cars while playing his violin. The duo successfully achieved brotherhood in Early December, as of now they are preparing to join the brotherhood for the 2010 spring rush.
Here the new members can be seen at the Fall 20009 formal with the rest of the brotherhood. John can be seen second from the left in the front row, and Jon can be seen in the middle of the back row.
As of October 2009, Charlie Hernandez's tenure as the Athletics Chair of Acacia fraternity has come to a close. While Charlie opted to run for the position of Rush Chair during the November elections, Adam Brownstein was elected to be the new Athletics Chair. Adam (an Economics major) is returning to the position after he left in 2008 to become Treasurer. How this will end is anybody's guess, but many of the most successful managers of sports in the past have been people who applied analytic economic theory to sports like Billy Beane did with the Oakland A's. However, before looking to the future, here is a review of the accomplishments of the previous Athletics Chair. Charlie took over in 2009 at the beginning of intramural softball season. The team went undefeated during the regular intramural competition, making it all the way to the second round of playoffs before falling 15-7 due to being a man short. The next main sport which was entered during the 2009 fall intramural season was Soccer. The team went 3-3-0 (W-L-D) during the regular season making it into the playoffs where it fell in the first round 3-1. Acacia next entered the no-tap bowling competition where they qualified for the playoffs after the first day of competition, however, they were knocked out in the second round of the playoffs, losing out 298-300. In Volleyball and 3 V 3 Basketball Acacia made it to the playoffs in both cases, falling unfortunately, in the first round of playoffs in both competitions. Overall, despite Acacia not winning any competition outright, it must be acknowledged that in every single intramural entered, Acacia made it to the playoffs. It would seem that Adam Brownstein has stepped into the role at a good time. Although consistent, none of last year's teams were exceptional. As Charlie stated, “'we did well enough, but well enough wasn't enough.” Perhaps a new Athletics Chair will give our intramural teams the boost it needs to really excel.
Here, the Acacia soccer team is posing for a picture after the playoffs. From left to right they are: Justin (Keeper), Olson (Striker), Tom (Defender), Fred (Midfielder), Joe (Defender), Charlie (Midfielder), TJ (Defender), Tory (Defender), Joe (Midfielder) and Eric (Striker).
